16 February 15 - Attribute of God: Holiness

Attribute of God – Holiness

HOLINESS is synonymous with a state of being sacred, completely pure with a single content. We will attempt to examine this important attribute of God and how it relates to we his children.

Revelation 4:8 – And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Isaiah 6:2-3 – Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.

Habakukk 1:13 – Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.

The celestial bodies calling the word “holy” trice signify how important this subject matter is.
It can also mean GOD the father is holy (John 17:11), the son Jesus Christ is holy (Luke 4:34 – I know who you are the holy one of God) and the Holy spirit is holy, even holier than the name signifies.

Both times, the phrase is spoken or sung by heavenly creatures, and both times it occurs in the vision of a man who was transported to the throne of God: first by the prophet Isaiah and then by the apostle John in the old and new testament respectively.

The angels could have been singing something else rather than “Holy, holy, holy” but they choose “holy” which gives a strong hint of how significant this attribute is.

HOW DO WE COME IN?

God demands holiness from us.
1 Peter 1:15-16 – but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; since it is written, you shall be holy for I am holy

Mathew 5:48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The charge has been given to us “be holy as our heavenly father is” but the opposite is what we do.

Rev 3:15-16I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth

WHY IS HOLINESS DIFFICULT?

THE SINFUL NATURE IS IN CONSTANT FIGHT WITH OUR SPIRIT MAN

Roman 7:14-15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak as confirmed by Jesus when he saw his disciples sleeping after he has went to pray in Mathew 26:40-41

Matthew 24:12-13where Jesus is clearly teaching us that in the last days SIN will ABOUND and the LOVE of MANY Christians will grow cold. And because INIQUITY (or SIN) shall abound, the LOVE of many shall wax cold (or grow cold).

h2. EFFECT OF UNHOLINESS

1. IT SEPERATE US FROM OUR CREATOR

It dampens our fellowship with GOD, we are ashamed to go to church, we are scared to look at our spiritual leaders in the eye.

ISAIAH 59:1-4 – Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

2. IT BRINGS MOCKERY TO THE NAME OF THE HOLY GOD
When we are denied of our inheritance as a result of our sins, the world doesn’t know this, the only thing they know is you serve God, yet there is no evidence.

Ezekiel 20:9 – But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

Isaiah 43:6-7 – I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

3. IT MAKES A MOCKERY OF THE DEATH OF CHRIST
2 Corinthians 5:21 – For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

4. IT DEPRIVES US OF THE PEACE FREELY DUE TO US.
John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful

Because we want to keep this things hidden and it takes so much effort to hid our evils than to avoid these things.

5. IT MAKES US RUN WHEN NO ONE IS AFTER US
Proverb 28:1 – The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Leviticus 26:36 – As for those of you who may be left, I will also bring weakness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will chase them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee as though from the sword, and they will fall.

6. IT WILL LEADS TO A REPROBATE MIND
Rom 1:28 – And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

7. IT AFFECT OTHERS (UNBELIVERS, CHILDREN, FRIENDS, STRANGERS…)

Luke 7:10 – In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

How about a believer that was lead astray because of our attitude?

Mathew 18:6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

BENEFIT OF HOLINESS

1. THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE
John 16:2-3 – They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

2. IT BRING FORTH THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
Galatians 5:16-17 – So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.

3. IT MAKES YOU BOLD AS LION – Proverb 28:1

4. OUR FATHER IS GLORIFIED
Mathew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven

5. YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO SEE GOD
James 1:12 – Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him

Hebrews 12:14 – Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

Mathew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God
Psalm 24:3-5 – Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior.

6. WE BECOME UNTOUCHABLE
Job 1:9-10

WHAT CAN WE DO TO ACHIEVE HOLINESS
1. FLEE FROM ALL APPEARANCE OF EVIL
1 Thessalonian 5:21-22
There are some temptations and sins you can’t afford to hang around with, if you do escape, you will with a black eye. These sins you have to flee from them.

1 Corinthians 6:18 – Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.

I looked thorough different versions of the bible and all of them used the word “FLEE or RUN”, the Douay-Rheims Bible put it this way “Fly fornication. Every sin that a man doth, is without the body; but he that committeth fornication, sinneth against his own body.”

2. DROP DOES VICES AND HABITS, DON’T WAIT FOR GOD TO TAKE IT OFF YOU
Hebrew 12:1-4 – Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

3. WITH THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
John 14:26 – But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

4. THROUGH SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE
These disciplines have been adequately addressed in our February 2015 devotions. The discipline of fellowship, confession, praying, fasting…

Just like you do not give up on your children, so does God not give up on us. He is sad when he see us wandering away and disobeying, bringing shame to his name. But he is patiently waiting for us to return to him. Luke 15:11-32.
